Web 2.0 was born began as an affirmative answer to a question raised by O'Reilly and Media Live International in Web 2.0 by during a brainstorming session. The question was: Does the dot-com collapse, mark a significant turning point for the web, and a call for action with Web 2.0 initiatives becoming even more relevant? Within a year and a half, the term Web 2.0 made a remarkable virtual presence with over 9.5 million Google citations.
With some decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom, there persists a strong disagreement about the meaning of Web 2.0 The initial brainstorming session resulted in the formation of two columns, under the headings Web 1.0 and Web 2.0; each listed their associated ideas respectively. With former comprising of Double Click, Ofoto, Akamai and so on, while Web 2.0 with Google Adsense, Flicker, BiTorrent etc. These endless lists raised a revelatory question about what constitutes Web 1.0 and Web 2.0.
This question becomes particularly crucial because the Web 2.0 design meme is extremely widespread so that companies are now passing it on as a marketing buzzword, without any real-substantial understanding. The question remains difficult because many of those buzzword-addicted start-ups are definitely not Web 2.0, while some of the applications identified as Web 2.0, like Napster and BitTorrent, are not 'proper' web applications at the first place! Thus, by analysing the success stories of web 1.0 and by its interesting new applications, it becomes necessary to chart the principles that demonstrate what constitutes Web 2.0
